How would you describe Atticus Finch as "generous"?

He does the right thing even when he doesn't want to, like shooting the dog and defending Tom Robinson. He also has a generous spirit towards people like the Cunninghams and Mrs. Dubose. He's able to put himself in other people's shoes, except for Bob Ewell. He makes a grave mistake in not realizing how dangerous the man really is.
