What is the difference between a trooper and a soldier?

None, really. It used to be that a trooper was in the cavalry. Then they started using "troops" for any armed forces. Troop is not nearly as colorful as trooper, though I've heard Army non-coms say "He's a good troop. He's almost never AWOL."
