How to turn a KA-BAR handle black?

So ive read about how in the past they used black shoe polish so the charlies wouldnt spot the knife, so ive tried to do it to my old KA-BAR with the leather stacked handle. But it hasnt quite worked. So I was wondering how do you exactly make the handle black. Thanks!!
